Milan Fashion Week: Ferretti’s Aquatic Dreams for Spring 2013
Seemingly bioluminescent gowns, freshly netted from the watery underworld or skimmed from the shimmering surface of the evening sea, clung to the models walking Alberta Ferretti’s runway for Spring 2013. Details of algae-like sequin and beading glittered lightly against the soft and subtle colors Ferretti is known for. In this case she chose deep midnight blues, muted turquoises, sandy neutrals, and shimmery blacks.
Ferretti’s collection held solidly to the theme of delicate sea life without distraction or anomaly in any of the looks. Especially evocative of this watery world were both the wave-swept draping techniques and the organza details resting like opaque filmy seaweed against the skin. The exceptionally crafted Italian lace tulle and luxury silk organza, historically the best in the world, served Ferretti beautifully for this 2013 collection.
In typical style, Ferretti kept the silhouettes classically feminine by mostly keeping the waistline above the hips, unlike many of her counterparts for the season; when she did elongate the waistline it was usually with lace applique details rather than breaking the natural line of the figure. Her necklines were deep dramatic Vs and wandering asymmetrical gardens of sea-lace.
Ferretti may have gone a little too literal when she attached what seemed like fisherman’s net, albeit fine sparkling lace fishermen’s net, to two of the looks, though overall this was a stunning cohesive collection sure to please and successful in evoking the natural world in the not always so natural fashion world.
