Guide to Spas in Italy

Welcome to our Guide to Spas in Italy! It's not possible to list all the spas in Italy so we have includee those we have personally visited and liked as well as others recommended to us. Until a few years ago an Italian vacationing at a spa drank the local water (meant to be healthy), took mud baths, strolled in the park, and dined with gusto. At Montecatini and Fiuggi, for example, you can do just that, staying at one of those glorious old-style "Grand Hotels." Now at American-style hotels guests are not just passive, and diet meals, exercize, massage, yoga, gyms, and all those goodies are offered. If you have favorites, send contact information plus a brief description we'll be glad to post them.

If you have a long layover at Milan's Malpensa 2000 airport, or want some pampering before you face the big city, try Porttofino's at Terminal 1, Arrivals, exit 1-2. Try a 15-minute hydromassage or a half-hour relaxing massage. Treatments are available for men and women, and there's an all-day package. Open all year from 10 to 22. Tel: +39-02-585-81152, Fax: +39-02-585-899301.

  • Hotel Posta Marcucci, Bagno Vignone (near Siena) is my favorite place in the world for beauty, a fabulous outdoor pool heated with thermal water year-round, and incredible value for money. Check the link above for more information.

  • Capri Palace Hotel, Via Capodimonte 2, 80071 Anacapri (Capri). Tel: +39-081-978-0111, Fax: +39-081-837-3191, Web: http://www.capri-palace.com

  • Grand Hotel Tombolo di Marina di Castagneto Carducci , (Leghorn), Tel: +39-0565-74530. Now we know why Fergie (Duchess of York) likes to visit this area - this spa offers a treatment for hydrating the skin that includes being coverd with algae and massaged under a soft shower that extends the length of the bed. Exfoliation is done with sea salt followed by a soak for 10 minutes in a special cream and, dulcis in fondo, a final passage of sea water to rinse.

  • Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, Via Roma 1, 22021 Bellagio (Como), open all year, Tel: +39-031-950-216, Fax: +39-031-951-520

  • Hotel Rosa Spina, Bolzano, Tel: +39-0471-849-500. Try floating on an air mattress in water of 100 degrees Farenheit. Excellent for sporty types but you'll be so limp that someone will probably have to help you to your room.
