Introduction to Milan

Photo of Milan's Duomo

Milan, like other major cities in the world, has its main luxury shopping district, often called the "Golden Quadrangle" which flanks the cathedral of San Babila, and is enclosed by Via Senato, Corso Venezia, Via Montenapoleone, and Via Manzoni. The area between the quadrangle and Il Duomo, the imposing cathedral with its Gothic facade and soaring Gothic spires overlooking an enormous square, has some of the highst-priced real estate and biggest fashion names in the world.

The only real department store in Italy is called La Rinascente, and faces the large open square in front of the cathedral,Piazza del Duomo. Giorgio Armani's first job in Milan was assisting the architect who designed the store windows. Milanese and tourists alike flock to the 7th floor snack bar and restaurant "La Terrazza" whose menus are supervised by super-chef Gualtiero Marchesi for a view of the cathedral spires and city roof-tops.

Milanese of all ages like to stop by FIORUCCI (Galleria Passarella 1, just off Piazza San Babila, a few steps from Via Montenapoleone), a trend-setter for years, whose windows are full of fun and fantasy. The emporium-like basement has countless small stalls with everything from kitchen gadgets to Oshkosh for kids, household objects from North Africa, buttons, stationery, books, a woman who reads your fortune in the cards for $20 (only afternoons), little gold animal charms from Pomellato, hair ornaments from all over the world, a Swatch counter, and the ultimate for newborns, tiny sweaters knit in silk or cashmere, in pink, lime, pale yellow, and white. The three-story emporium also sells the traditional Fiorucci jeans (considered by many women the best-fitting), underwear, t-shirts, and jackets. For Christmas there are candles, gold angels, tablecloths, and the traditional Fiorucci Christmas T-shirt, a best seller and collectors item.

Just outside the Fiorucci store, in the middle of Corso Vittorio Emanuele (a pedestrian mall) is the "Fiorucci - Milano Eventi" kiosk where you can check your e-mail on Internet for free, get information on all current events in Milan, and buy tickets for concerts and the theater.

Boutiques on these "golden streets" spring up like mushrooms and close just as fast. We try to keep these pages up to date but it's not easy. A tip: if you are looking for a special name try using our internal search engine, or when you are on a page, if using Windows, do Control-F and fill in the name you seek in the little window.
