- Bar Gelateria Vivoli
- Via Isole delle Stinche 7, Tel: (055) 292334, open 8:30 to 13 Tuesday through Saturday, 10 to 13 Sunday. It's hot and you want the most delicious ice cream Florence has to offer? You're in the Santa Croce area ("Room With A View")? This tiny ice cream shop has its walls covered with articles from publications all over the world singing its praises.
- Caffe' Italiano
- Via Condotta 56r, 50122, Tel: (055) 281082 Behind Piazza Signoria, in one of the angles with true Florentine atmosphere, although recently opened it has already become one of the most popular caffes in Florence. Created by the owner of the restaurant Le Murate , the welcoming atmosphere has been lovingly created down to the last detail. There's a room for a light lunch, and the cultural side is encouraged by frequent meetings and presentations of new books.
- Dolce Vita
- Piazza del Carmine, 50124, Tel: (055) 284595 Closed Sunday. Located in one of the most beautiful piazzas on the other side of the Arno river, this has become the Florence's fashion bar. It's packed for the before-dinner aperitivo, especially in the summer, and since it's open until very late, it's a must meeting point for young professionals and artists.
- Dolci e Dolcezze
- Piazza Beccaria 84, 50123, Tel: (055) 234 5458 specializes in take-home pastries, pies, and cakes. Italians seldom bake at home but will often buy something special for Sunday lunch.
- Giacosa
- Via Tornabuoni 83, 50123, Tel: (055) 239 8206 is right in the heart of Florence's toniest shopping street, with prices to match, but it's worth it just to catch the scene and see the beautifully laid out snacks. The Negroni (made with Campari) was invented here. Yummy chocolates, too.
- Gilli
- Piazza della Repubblica 39r, 50213, Tel: (055) 2396310. Centrally and conveniently located on a large square, you can sit inside or outside or stand at the bar. This cafe also served as the background for a famous photograph by Ruth Orkin, said to be the best-selling poster in the US, taken in the fifties of a beautiful American striding past a gantlet of admirers lounging outside the cafe.
- Giubbe Rosse
- Piazza della Repubblica 13-14r, 50213, Tel: (055) 212280. The name translates to "Red Jackets" and this is one of Florence's historical literary cafes since the beginning of the century. The tradition is continued with lectures and shows, and Florentines like to stop by for their before-lunch or dinner aperitivo.
- Maramao
- Via dei Macci 79r, 50122, Tel: (055) 234341. Closed Sunday. It's the latest of a new generation of places where Florentines like to congregate, open until 2am and very close to Piazza Santa Croce, it's constructed to resemble the deck of a ship. There's a disco-bar surrounded by polished wood and portholes, and also has a small restaurant.
- Rivoire
- Via Vacchereccia 4r, 50123, Tel: (055) 213312. This is the place for people-watching, a grand old-fashioned cafe from which you can see most of Piazza della Signoria and take in the scene as well as enjoy the home-made pastries, candies, sandwiches, and drinks.
