Logan Bentley is an American journalist who has lived, worked, and shopped in Italy for years. She was Italian editor for the "Courvoisier Book of the Best", is a contributor to the Italian section of "Born to Shop," and revised the Rome section of "Where to Wear - Italy - 2004". She has also written a number of articles on shopping for newspapers and magazines. This guide was compiled with the help of her super-shopper daughter Barbara Lessona who is as demanding as they come and can spot a good buy at a hundred yards.
Although we do our best to keep the pages up-to-date it's always best to check first before making a trip to a place off the beaten track. Sales take place in January and July and the dates are determined each time by the city council in each locality. Sometimes during the year a shop will hold what they call "Promozione" (Promotion) offering discounts on some merchandise.
Don't forget that if you will be leaving the European Common Market with your purchases you are entitled to the "Detaxe" - a refund of the sales tax you paid. Shops have a minimum amount you must spend in order to qualify.
